As UV Safety month approaches and the summer temperatures rise, it is important to understand the risks of exercising outdoors:
  • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of fluids.
  • Wear light colored, loose fitting clothing.
  • Wear sunscreen to prevent sunburn. Sunburns can affect the skin’s ability to cool.
  • Use common sense and only attempt exercises that you are familiar with.
  • Avoid physical activity between the hours of 10am and 3pm, the hottest hours of the day.
  • Age and medical condition can also affect the way one’s body responds to heat. Understand your limits.
  • Know the signs of heat stroke and heat exhaustion in case of an emergency. These symptoms include nausea, vomiting, muscle cramps, fatigue, headache, and dizziness.
  • St. Mary’s Wellness Center is a great alternative to exercising outdoors. The Wellness Center is located off of Daniels Bridge Road and is available 24/7 to all members.
